Force Zune to Sync Lumia - WORKS!

Lost the original data cable of my Nokia Lumia 610 and replacement cable I bought only charges the battery! At first there seems to be no way to force Zune to sync to my Lumia. You have to connect to AC power and wait 10 minutes! What a hassle. And sometimes it simply doesn't sync.

Now, I've discovered a real working way to force the sync.
  1. Make sure your computer recognizes the active network as a Home Network. The sync will not work on Work or Public networks.
  2. Plug in your phone to AC power and make sure it is connected to the same (home) network as your computer.
  3. Close Zune (if already open) and start it again.
  4. Eureka! It zyncs immediately!

Force update from Windows 7.5 to 7.8 on Nokia Lumia 610

Since I'm in the Philippines, I thought I'd probably have to wait a while as the Windows 7.8 update rolls out to other regions. WRONG! You can update your Windows Phone right now! Even if Zune keeps saying your phone is updated, when you're sure you're still on Windows 7.5.

Try this:
  1. Enable Airplane mode
  2. Connect your phone to your computer and go to the update tab in Zune
  3. Wait a certain period while it says "checking for updates" (I counted 25 seconds since my internet is rather slow) then disconect your internet by disabling wifi on your computer or removing the network cable
  4. Zune should say an update is available for your phone. If it displays something else, repeat steps 2 and 3 but experiment with the waiting time. This is the tricky part.
  5. Re-enable your internet and proceed with the update.
  6. You might have to go through steps 2-5 about three times as you install a series of updates eventually leading to Windows 7.8.
My steps 1-6 are similar to what you will find elsewhere in the internet about force update to Windows 7.8. But for Philippine users, I just want to assure you that it works for us here too. You just need to adjust a longer waiting time (Step 3) if your internet is slow, and shorter if your connections is fast.

Now excuse me, I need to experiment with my resizable live tiles! Yey!

Note: I'm using a Lumia 610 that's not locked to either Smart, Globe, or Sun. I think the network doesn't really matter with this method.

Happy Birthday Dad!

My Dad's birthday is on Labor Day! Cool, huh?

He was still asleep when I left and we won't be seeing each other until Monday. I guess my mother will hand him my present in my absence.

We originally planned to buy him some long sleeves but we never decided on a color. He has tons of them already. Mom ended up buying a gift check while I got him a music CD. I'm crossing my fingers he doesn't have that album yet!

Page Rank Update?

There seems to be talk about a possible Google page rank update so I checked one of my blog's page rank across multiple data centers. That blog was my first ever since I tried blogging. Despite its humble page rank of 2, it was and is the source of practically all my Adsense earnings. A positive page rank shift will be very good news indeed.

Moments after hitting the "check page rank" button, to my amusement, some data centers actually say its page rank has moved up to a 3! WOW! Of course, there is never any assurance that it will indeed settle at 3 once the page rank dance is over but it's just a very good feeling to see that number 3 beside its URL. Even if just one data center out of a hundred said it was a 3, I would still consider it a reason to celebrate. Why?

The previous times I have checked my page rank during page rank updates, it has and was always a 2 in all data centers. Now that it's showing a hint of a 3, it is most certainly an indication of an increase in pagerank.

It is generally agreed that page rank is a real number, that is, it is never exactly an integer such as 2 or 3. Instead, it can lie anywhere between these integers and can be a 2.44449 or a 2.50001. I would theorize that the page rank integer that data centers display is actually rounded.

Due to the logarithmic nature of page rank, moving up by one point means that your home page has become approximately 10 times more important in cyberspace. That's not an easy feat!

Powerless without power

Ahh.. the comfort of electricity! We have been deprived of it since yesterday. The sudden comeback of electric power refreshes my appreciation for it but also makes me realize how dependent we (or at least I) have become towards it.

Life practically froze in its absence and we were left sitting in the darkness. No TV, no computer, no internet. It was almost unbearable. Come daylight and the house revealed its sorry state. Without much to do, I noticed the ceiling is about to fall off. Old patches fail to hide cracks on the walls. Our stuff are hopelessly scattered on every little space.

These weird realizations came to my head because I felt powerless without power and did nothing but sit and look around. It's sad it required a 24-hour power outage for me to notice the real world that exists. The real world I easily ignore once I'm absorbed into the digital dimension.

The best phone accessory

I gave up a Nokia 6151 in favor of my good old 3200. I've been looking forward to having the 6151 that my mom receives from her retention plan. Now that it's finally here, I realize it doesn't have a flashlight!

The flashlight is the best thing Nokia attached to my phone. For countless times, it has guided me in darkness. Many missing coins were found because of it. With it, I have studied for exams despite blackouts. It also makes a very good light source for shadow plays.

I don't see why more expensive mobile phones with mp3 players, cameras, internet acces, and GPS can't have a handy flashlight.
